Tax Clinic FAQS
1. What are the times of the clinic?
The tax clinic at Barclay Manor will begin on Monday, March 4, 2024 and run twice weekly on Mondays from 10AM to 1PM and Thursdays from 10AM to 4PM, until Thursday, April 25, 2024.
2. Where is the clinic located?
Our clinic will be at Barclay Manor (1447 Barclay St) in the multipurpose room. There will be signage outside the building directing you to the back of the building for access to the ground floor multi-purpose room.
3. What do I need to bring?
You need to bring all your 2023 tax receipts and preferably the Notice of Assessment (NOA) from 2022 with you. As well, you will need to fill out an intake form with your personal information.
4. Who is eligible for this free tax clinic?
Please read the requirements for using the free tax clinic:
-Individuals that make $35,000/year or less or senior-led households that make $45,000 or less can use this service. This is flexible.
-You must have a simple tax situation. Income can include:
Employment, pension, support payments, RRSPs, scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, grants, CPP, disability/employment insurance, social assistance, and Interest under $1,000.
-We cannot work with anyone who is self-employed or has any international income sources (outside CAN and USA).
-If possible participants can bring their 2022 Notice of Assessment or 2023 Tax return summary, their 2023 tax slips (for example T4, T5), and any relevant income tax slips and receipts.
5. Who does my tax return?
The tax clinic is only a drop-off point to package your intake form and tax receipts. Your tax return will be done remotely by volunteers who are screened and trained by CRA. They are not CRA agents or professional accountants.
6. How will I know my taxes have been done?
The income tax returns are filed electronically and may require ‘autofill my return’ to check for missing information on your account. You will agree to this and confirm when you sign the intake form.
When your tax return is filed, we will get your package back and notify you by phone or email that you can pick up your tax receipts. Your tax return will already be in CRA’s database.
7. Additional information
If the volunteer needs more information from you, they will call or email you, but these are not secure ways of communication.
Please be aware that if an adjustment to your tax return is needed, you will have to contact CRA directly (1-800-959-8281)
