Claudine Matlo (she/her/hers)

Executive Director

Claudine has over 15 years of experience working with the older adult population within Neighbourhood Houses and other related seniors serving organizations. Claudine holds a Masters of Gerontology and a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies and Psychology from Simon Fraser University.

Claudine most recently held the role of Director of Family and Senior Services at Mt. Pleasant Neighbourhood House. She brings proven experience working with public funders, managing and reporting on the various funding streams, and is well known and respected by our funders.

Claudine has skills in fiscal management, human resources, and community engagement.

Volunteers, Program and Events

Miriam Homem de Mello (she/her/hers)

Programs and Volunteers Manager

Graduated in Philosophy and Linguistics, Miriam worked as a visual artist and book editor in Brazil. After moving to Vancouver, she became fascinated by the field of Gerontology and graduated from Langara College, complementing her studies with a certificate in Hospitality. Miriam has worked at WESN for over a year, bringing to the community her genuine interest in ensuring full-filled lives for everyone.

Yathu Radhakrishnan (he/him/his)

Events and Communications Coordinator

Yathu Radhakrishnan is a graduate of Kwantlen Polytechnic University with a degree in Marketing Management. His experience working with seniors started at a bookstore in Ontario and he has taken his joy of working with older adults to places like community centres, retirement communities, and, for many years now, the West End Seniors Network.

Lisa Gosselin (she/her/hers)

Choose To Move Activity Coach

Lisa Gosselin is our Choose to Move Program Activity Coach. She has a diverse background in business and is a recent graduate from the Vancouver School of the Healing Arts, as an Enriched Hatha Yoga Teacher. She enjoys volunteering as a Yoga Teacher to seniors in the community and is passionate about Health and Wellness.

Margaret Ovenell (she/her/hers)

Close To Home Program Coordinator

Margaret Ovenell is a Master’s student in Gerontology at Simon Fraser University. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in 2021, Margaret returned to Vancouver and worked as a Cluett Fellow (Selections and Program Coordinator) at the Loran Scholars Foundation. Margaret is dedicated to combatting social isolation and building community and is excited to do that as the Close to Home Coordinator at the West End Seniors’ Network. When she’s not at the WESN or studying, she can be found cross stitching at her weekly stitching group or trying to learn how to swim.

Administration and Operations

Joe Humphries (he/him/his)

Manager of Operations

Joe completed his MA in Gerontology from Simon Fraser University in 2020. He has been working with older adults for over 6 years and has been at WESN for over 2.5 years. Joe started at WESN in 2021 as a Community Services Coordinator and has also held the position of Manager of Community Services. Joe is responsible for overseeing the finance, human resources, and site operations of all three WESN sites.

Lillian Grumbach (she/her/hers)

Administrative Coordinator

Lilian holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a postgraduate degree in Business Administration. She’s also certified as a Project Management Professional by PMI. Over the years, she’s gained experience in various tech companies, working in roles such as Project Management, Product Management, and Operations. My life purpose is to make a positive difference in people’s lives, and I feel incredibly fortunate to join the WESN team that fully embraces this purpose.

Community Services

Meeka Marsolais (she/her/hers)

Community Services Manager

Meeka Marsolais, our Manager of Community Services, holds a PBD in Gerontology from SFU and previously led the Close to Home and Choose to Move programs at WESN. Meeka is passionate about addressing social isolation and loneliness among older adults in the community and celebrating aging. Beyond her role at WESN, Meeka hosts a monthly radio show and podcast called “Talking Aging” and leads a Queer 55+ program on Friday nights.

Niloofar Hedayati (she/her/hers)

Senior Community Connector

Niloofar is currently pursuing her second master’s degree in Gerontology at SFU. With a background in architecture, she’s focused on creating age-friendly environments that enhance older adults’ mobility and social participation. Through research projects and community engagement, Niloofar is committed to bridging the gap between theory and practice, aiming to make a meaningful impact on the lives of older adults.

Miel Nicholson (she/her/hers)

Community Services Coordinator

As a Community Services Coordinator for the Better at Home program, Miel Nicholson is dedicated to empowering and enhancing the lives of individuals as well as facilitating vital connections within the community. Currently completing a diploma as a Social Service Worker with a specialization in Gerontology, Miel comes from a dynamic background. She blends her lifelong passion working with seniors in various capacities with skills from a dynamic past career coordinating in the film industry. Outside work, Miel enjoys handicrafts, dance, music, outdoor activities, and cooking.

Laura Fee (she/her/hers)

Manager

Laura has worked in retail management for several decades, while pursuing her Masters Degree in creative writing. She enjoys creating a vibrant and welcoming space for customers, donors, volunteers and staff, and being part of the West End Community. She is an avid writer and reader and adoring Nana to grandson Noah.

Gordana Smocilac (she/her/hers)

Assistant Manager

Gordana completed her Bachelor in Economics, Accounting, and has extensive experience in that field. She began volunteering at Clothes and Collectibles in 2007, and was hired as an Assistant Manager in 2010. She enjoys working with a wonderful group of staff and volunteers. She likes to socialize and interact with seniors. Caring for others makes her feel valued.

Assistant Manager

Will was a lover of thrifting and a frequent shopper before joining the team in 2019. He has worked with seniors in mental health hospice and a classical record store. Working at Clothes and Collectibles allows time to meet seniors and hear their stories.

Supervisor

With a passion for nature, diversity, art and culture, Brenda proudly calls Vancouver home. A high-energy and passionate individual, empathy and humour fuel her creative mind and authentic soul. The world fascinates her, as it offers infinite possibilities for learning and creating. Brenda loves being a part of the Clothes & Collectibles team.

Supervisor

Larisa is a graduate of Medical Science with a degree in General Medicine from the University of Sarajevo. Although she has joined the team recently, she feels she has belonged for a long time. She is passionate about making a difference for seniors and nothing makes her happier than enriching their lives.

Susan Paré (she/her/hers)

Manager of Support and Information Services

Susan completed her Bachelor of Business Administration at Simon Fraser University. She volunteered for 3 years in palliative care at St. Paul’s Hospital, and she was an Information and Referral volunteer at our Kay’s Place location before taking on this role.

Deborah Loren (she/her/hers)

I & R and Housing Support Coordinator

Deborah has extensive experience supporting seniors and volunteers, including ten years assisting victims of crime, two years managing a province-wide mature drivers’ program, and many years supervising volunteers of all ages in not-for-profit organisations. Deborah enjoyed volunteering at Kay’s Place before taking on this role.
