Each month we’ll invite you to cultural celebrations, community gatherings, games, music, movement sessions, walking groups, among others. We offer new ideas, monthly newsletters, giveaways, contests, prizes, and adventures with community partners.

Programs We Offer

Arts Programs
  1. Barclay Yarn Artisans – A knitting group full of amazing conversations and people! All levels of knitters are welcome. Participants must bring their own supplies. Mondays and Wednesdays 10:00 AM to 12 Noon.
  2. Barclay Visual Arts Group – Paint, photo, sketch or explore AI arts in this multimedia arts group. Artists of all skill levels are welcome. Participants must bring their own supplies. 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM.
  3. Theater Playshop with Deborah – Learn to act, read scripts, and improve with the multi-talented Deborah! Novice and experienced actors are welcome. Third Friday of each month, please refer to our newsletter for exact dates.
  4. Movies Friday – Considered the seventh art, cinema entertains and educates. Our team seeks to bring films that are both relevant and educational.
Close To Home

The Close To Home program works to build connections and address isolation and loneliness in local West End buildings by offering onsite programs and events. With support from resident volunteer leaders and WESN staff, residents and WESN staff organize activities to encourage older adults to step out of their units and into the common area to talk, learn and share with their neighbours of all ages. Past programming has included workshops on frauds and scams, walking groups, games days, and crafting activities.

Games and Puzzles
  1. Poker and Tea Time – Play Texas Hold’em with fellow card lovers and enjoy a cup of tea afterwards. Participants must have a good understanding of Texas Hold’em to participate. Tuesdays 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
  2. Scrabble – Join our Scrabble group for a lively gathering of word enthusiasts, where strategic minds come together to create clever combinations and engage in friendly competition. Participants must have a good understanding of how Scrabble works. Wednesdays – 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
  3. Mahjong – Join a dedicated group of Mahjong enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer, join us for an engaging blend of strategy, skill, and camaraderie as we gather to enjoy the ancient game’s intricate tiles. Mondays 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
  4. Bridge – Discover the art of strategic card play and social connection in our Bridge group. Participants must have a good understanding of Bridge to participate. Mondays 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
  1. ESL Beginners with Chris – Start learning English with your West End peers and instructor Chris. This is a free class, open to all. Mondays 11:15 AM – 12:30 PM.
  2. ESL Intermediate with Iraj – This is an intermediate ESL class where students learn to read and converse in English. Tuesdays 11:15 AM to 12:45 PM.
  3. ESL Advanced with Walter – In this Advanced ESL class students have discussions about various topics in English while learning how to converse with day-to-day English. Tuesdays 1:30 – 3:30 PM.
  4. Spanish Beginners with Alicia – Ola! Learn the basic foundations of the Spanish language with Alicia. Please RSVP at Barclay Manor. Mondays 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
  5. Spanish Intermediate with Alicia – Learn to read and converse about everyday topics in Spanish. Please RSVP at Barclay Manor. Friday 11:00 AM – 12 PM.
  6. Spanish Conversation Group – Practice your Spanish and talk about everyday topics with your peers. Participants must be fluent in Spanish. Wednesdays 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
  7. French Conversation Group – Practice your French and talk about everyday topics with your peers. Participants must be fluent in French. Mondays 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
  8. German Conversation Group – Practice your German and talk about everyday topics with your peers. Participants must be fluent in German. Wednesdays 1:00 PM – 2:45 PM.
Learning opportunities
  1. Tech Help – Get assistance with your phone, tablet, and computer with a one-on-one session with one of our incredible Tech Help volunteers. Tech Help sessions are available throughout the week. Please call Barclay Manor to book your appointment.
  2. TED Talks and Discussion– Learn and converse with your peers about a wide variety of modern topics. Thursdays, 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
  3. West End Living Library – WELL is a place where stories are told from a variety of experiences and perspectives. Sign up to listen to your first book at Barclay Manor.

Mens Shed
  1. A Men’s Shed provides a safe and friendly environment where men can work on meaningful projects. Men work at their own pace, in their own time, in the company of other men. A Men’s Shed offers men an alternate way to reach out to avoid ‘isolation’ while giving back to society. Fridays 2:00 – 4:00 PM.
Musical opportunities
  1. Heritage Harmonies – Sing your favorite tunes with fellow music lovers! All are welcome. Tuesdays 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM
  2. Strum and Sing-a-long with Tara – Bring your favorite instrument and jam with an incredible group of multi-talented acoustic musicians. Participants must bring their own instrument and must have at least an intermediate level of proficiency with their instrument. Wednesdays 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
  3. Karaoke with Lan – It’s time for your solo! Sing your favourite Karaoke tunes at top of your lungs! All are welcome. Thursdays 12 PM to 2:00 PM.
  4. Ukelele Group – Experience the joy of music and camaraderie with our ukulele group, where seasoned players come together to strum delightful melodies! Players of all levels are welcome. Thursdays 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Physical Activities
  1. Choose to Move – A physical activity support program that is here to ignite your motivation and connect you with a supportive community. Take part in exercise sessions, dances, informative seminars, and more! Drop-ins are welcome. Mondays 1:30 – 2:30 PM.
  2. Gentle Hatha Yoga – Join Instructor Lisa Gosselin for a free all levels Hatha Yoga class. Hatha yoga is practiced at a slower pace, with a focus on the breath, controlled movements, and stretching. Please RSVP at Barclay Manor and bring your own mat. Wednesdays – 3:00 – 4:00 PM.
  3. Outdoor walking group – Walk, talk, and make new friends as you stay fit. This is a moderate-paced walking group. Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
  4. Nordic Walking Beginners – New to using walking sticks and want to get moving? This is the group for you! Learn to get your steps in with your walking poles and a great community. Thursdays 10:00 – 11:30 AM
Social Programs
  1. Men’s Breakfast at Denny’s – Get your pancakes, sausages, and coffee and enjoy a morning conversation with your fellow older men. Please RSVP at Barclay Manor as spaces are limited. Third Monday of every month, please refer to the newsletter for exact dates.
  2. Golden Guy’s Group – A 2SLGBTQ+ Men’s support group where Male-identifying individuals find connections, support and joy. Friday 3:15 PM to 4:45 PM.
  3. Dinner Club with Mauro – Join Mauro every month in exploring different cuisines in the West End. Once a month on the third Wednesday of each month. Please refer to the newsletter for exact dates. Please RSVP at Barclay Manor as space is limited.
  4. Coffee with Claudine – Join our Executive Director, Claudine Matlo, to discuss all things WESN and talk about what you would like to see in our community. This takes place on the last Wednesday of each month. Please refer to the newsletter for exact dates.
  5. Sunday Brunch with Liz – Join volunteer Liz at the Slyvia Hotel for a lovely brunch on the last Sunday of each month. Please refer to the newsletter for exact dates and RSVP at Barclay Manor as space is limited.
  6. Birthday Tea – Celebrate your birthday month with your other birthday buddies! Enjoy a beautiful cup of tea with a slice of cake and enjoy some live entertainment too! Please RSVP at Barclay Manor as space is limited. Attendees are welcome to bring a guest to celebrate with. The Birthday Tea takes place on the last Wednesday of every month. Please refer to the newsletter for exact dates.
Support Groups
  1. Golden Guys group for gay, bi, and trans men – This group fosters a space where members can freely explore their identities, discuss challenges, celebrate victories, and offer empathy and support. The Golden Guys meet every Friday 3:15 – 4:45pm at Barclay Manor.
  2. Java Social – Java Social is for anyone looking for meaningful social engagement and connection.
    This group meets weekly to discuss different topics, quotes and reflections. Join us to share , grow, and laugh together in a supportive environment.
