At the start of the pandemic, the landscape of my business changed drastically to being only home-based/remote. This change finally allowed me some time to volunteer more, which I have wanted to do for a long time.
When everything started to change so quickly, I immediately thought of the West End Seniors’ Network. With the age demographic that they serve being very vulnerable, especially with what was going on, I knew I wanted to try and help. I spoke with Abbie to see in what type of roles they needed volunteers – the existing list they had was already so diverse but had just expanded dramatically. Hearing all the ways they were stepping in to help, was not only inspiring but was very eye-opening as well.
I was paired with a few seniors for friendly call check-ins, some ongoing grocery shops, emergency shops, and errands, and did some fundraising to help with the sudden needs COVID 19 had brought on. The work of the WESN is so vital to our community. I am so grateful that I was welcomed in to be a part of their volunteer team. The relationships I have built with both staff and the seniors I am paired with are so important to me.
