I have enjoyed volunteering at WESN since October 2019. My initial volunteer role was helping with the monthly birthday celebrations and ‘Tea with Anthony’ (which of course are now virtual due to Covid-19).
Currently, I have one weekly afternoon reception shift, answering and directing calls as well as greeting folks and registering seniors for virtual and in-house programs. Also, one day a week I help with data entry and various clerical duties which allow the paid staff to do other important work. The variety is awesome!
My husband and I became BC residents in January 2019, uprooting ourselves from sunny Saskatchewan where we had lived all our lives. Such a change gives you a greater appreciation for the importance of long-standing relationships. I soon realized I needed to feel part of my West End community and volunteering certainly helped make this possible. Giving back to the community has been so important to my happiness Volunteering is a win-win because not only does WESN benefit, but you also get to structure and anticipate your time in a meaningful way. But most of all, you feel part of something greater than yourself.
There are many areas to get involved in and the staff are great to work with, providing on-site training as needed. They also are so appreciative of your support, making you want to give even more.
Thanks WESN staff for such a great opportunity!
