Thank you for your understanding as we work through the pandemic together.

Lyric sheets for the Heritage Harmonies Choir will be posted on the Virtual Programs page.

Select Programs are Cancelled from November 9-23

November 17, 2020 by backend

With the rise in COVID-19 cases, the November 7th public health order and the nature of the population WESN provides programs and services to, please note that we will not have the below listed programs run until after November 23, 2020.

We will determine next steps for after November 23 as the situation evolves.

The below list of cancelled programs includes a few that currently take place outdoors. As mentioned in the clarified public health order, groups of people should not meet outside or in restaurants either, not just indoors.

“No social gatherings of any size with anyone other than your immediate household. For example:

  • Do not invite friends or extended family to your household
  • Do not gather outdoors
  • Do not gather at restaurants

Note: Going for a walk is not considered a social gathering. You must make sure a walk does not turn into a group of people meeting outside.”

Peer Support Service: Recognising the Importance of Support in Later Life

October 1, 2020 by backend

For the past 9 years, I’ve been pleased to train volunteers in the practice of Peer Support for older adults living in the West End, Coal Harbour or Yaletown neighbourhoods of Vancouver. The comprehensive training takes place with a small group over a period of 6 months and combines theory and practice sessions. During the training, volunteers address topics such as loss, depression, anxiety and family of origin issues. Peer Support volunteers learn how to ask questions that increase a client’s ability to manage their own concerns more effectively.  By the end of their training, volunteers are confident to support their clients across up to 10 sessions.

The Peer Support volunteer team is supervised by myself, a psychotherapist with over 40 years of experience. Additionally, volunteers discuss their clients on a bi-weekly basis with myself to augment the support experience.

Our life-experienced Peer Support team have made a tremendous contribution to the lives of our clients. It is clear that the need for support can occur in later life, and we are proud to be able to offer assistance. We continue to receive positive feedback from our clients that the experience of Peer Support contributed to their health and well-being, especially during difficult times.

For further information please contact Alan Stamp, Manager of Support and Information Services at 604-669-7339 or [email protected].

August 2020 Engagement Question

September 3, 2020 by wesn

Every month we pose a question and invite responses. As August 17th was National Thrift Shop day, we asked: What is your best find from Clothes and Collectibles?

“Super-spooky! This February I realized a Clothes & Collectibles $3 hand-painted black evening wrap was created & signed by the South Pacific artist whose identically-decorated evening pants I’d bought at his little shop there in 1996. I’ve lived in the same place, 3 minutes’ walk from Clothes and Collectibles, since 1993. But the clothes & artist started 3,000 miles away. You figure it out — I can’t.”

“Figurine.”

“Best find a the Thrift Store is a yellow long dress, mexican style bought by a old friend great for around the house.”

May 2020 Engagement Question

June 9, 2020 by wesn

Each month we ask a question that anybody can answer – they’re meant to stimulate conversations.

For May, we asked “What is one positive change, that began in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, that people should retain long after the situation has passed?”

One individual said that, “The removal of bicycles from the Seawall was long overdue – after 6 weeks the experiment has proven that the separation of bikes(skaters, boarders) from walkers is an idea whose time has come. Car traffic in the Park is a separate, more complicated question.”

Another member said, “It is my hope that we will take to heart the richness of compassion, care and kindness when we encounter one another now as well as in all days to come – we cannot exist without others, we need each other in close contact and in passing as we go about our daily life. These attributes of our human nature as well as the appreciation of our freedom to move about and rub shoulders with others deserve to be on top of the list of life’s treasures.”

Thank you for participating. Keep an eye out for the June engagement question.
