Senior Peer Support Volunteer

(2 hours/week)

The Senior Peer Support program benefits seniors who are experiencing difficulty coping with life stressors (illness, mild depression, isolation, loss). Qualified volunteers provide seniors with confidential, nonjudgmental emotional support and encouragement, as well as with information and referral to community resources. Volunteers undergo intensive training and are supervised by and report to a Program Coordinator.

Responsibilities
  • Age 55+
  • An understanding of seniors needs and experiences
  • An understanding of and/or experience working in a confidential environment
  • Friendly and patient personality
  • Good listening skills
  • Able to navigate around the West End independently
  • Comfortable working with diverse members of the community
  • Basic computer skills
  • Flexible schedule
  • English speaking, writing and reading skills – additional language(s) an asset (Spanish, Farsi, Mandarin, Russian, Korean)

Housing Elder Abuse Outreach Program Volunteer

(3 hours/week)

Senior renters are an extremely vulnerable group and can be at risk of experiencing elder abuse. The Housing Elder Abuse Outreach Program is a new project aimed at spreading awareness and prevention of elder abuse by educating landlords and senior renters in the West End. By approaching buildings and talking to managers and building owners as well as seniors, this project hopes to mediate the susceptibility of older whose housing situation may put them at risk of experiencing elder abuse.

Responsibilities
  • Attend learning workshops and group meetings
  • Approach West End building and engage with building owners and managers on seniors issues particularly those concerning elder abuse and housing concerns
  • Approach senior renters and survey their problems with housing
  • Track conversations and meetings with various West End buildings, provide regular updates
  • Be in consistent contact with the Program Coordinator by phone or email
  • Minimum 3 month commitment
Skills Required
  • Computer Skills (email, MS Word, Excel)
  • Good command of the English language
  • Assertive and able to take control of a situation; yet approachable and non-confrontational
  • Able to think on your feet, ask questions and navigate instructions independently
  • Compassionate; an interest in working with seniors and concerned about issues surrounding seniors
  • Able bodied: vehicle not required, but able to navigate streets and walk betweenbuildings and up stairs

Safeway Shopping Program – Desk Captain

(Thursday mornings, 4 hours)

The West End Seniors’ Network runs a Shopping Program at Safeway (Robson and Denman) Thursday mornings. We need a Desk Captain to help answer the phone to write down grocery orders that seniors will call in. The Desk Captain is also responsible for printing grocery orders out from an email account, which are emailed in by some individuals.  The volunteer must have a clear speaking voice, be comfortable on the phone, have computer skills and able to multitask in a fast past environment. Ability to think on your feet is important as well!

Skills & Experience
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good attention for detail
  • Outgoing, social and patient personality
  • Good team working skills
  • Experience working with computers (Microsoft office, email, typing)
  • Comfortable on the phone (clear and loud speaking voice)
  • Able to undergo a Criminal Record Check

IGA Shopping Program – Desk Captain

(Wednesday mornings, 4 hours)

The West End Seniors’ Network runs a Shopping Program at IGA (Burrard and Smithe) Wednesday mornings. We need a Desk Captain to help answer the phone to write down grocery orders that seniors need.  The volunteer must have a clear speaking voice, be comfortable on the phone, have computer skills and able to multitask in a fast past environment. Ability to think on your feet is important as well!

  • Good attention for detail
  • Outgoing, social and patient personality
  • Good team working skills
  • Comfortable on the phone (clear and loud speaking voice)

Friendly Visitor

We are looking for a Friendly Visitor/Walking Companion with a senior once a week. You will be providing companionship and an important social opportunity, 1-2 hours a week. We welcome adults of all ages to join our team!

Skills & Experience
  • You enjoy the company of seniors
  • You have good listening and communication skills
  • You are patient, respectful and understanding
  • You will maintain confidentiality about all personal information
  • You will be consistent and reliable with your visits
  • You are able to handle an emergency such as your client falling
  • You are able to operate a wheelchair
  • You are willing to undertake a Criminal Record Check

Volunteer Driver

(3 hours/week)

Make owning a car cool again! The West End Senior’s Network is looking for safe, reliable and friendly volunteer drivers to help seniors living in the West End get to their medical and other critical appointments. Don’t own a car? No problem! We belong to Modo car coop.

Clothes & Collectibles Volunteer

(4 hours/week)

We are the friendly thrift boutique of the West End Seniors’ Network. Store proceeds support programs and services for older adults in our neighbourhood. We offer quality used clothing, shoes, and accessories at reasonable prices. We also stock books and household items. Be sure to check out our art work, collectibles and vintage items when you visit. Our dedicated team of volunteers and staff clean, sort, and sell the goods so generously donated. We are always ready to share our latest treasures, some fashion advice, and a smile.

The store is open from 10am to 6pm Tuesday to Friday, and 10am to 5pm on Saturday.
