Programs and Activities

We offer our members a variety of classes, clubs and drop-ins at Barclay Manor. Our 30+ programs are a fun way to enjoy a hobby, learn a new skill and socialize with others, all at an affordable cost. Activities are open to older adults 55+ with a current WESN membership. You are welcome to try an activity before becoming a member.

Acting Class

Our intermediate level Acting Class encourages participants to explore a range of emotional expression in a fun and supportive environment. The regular class is full but there is an open class on the last Wednesday of each month for new students.

Active Minds

Drop by Barclay Manor Thursday mornings for a mental workout to keep your brain active and your memory healthy. If you enjoy solving word games, sudoku, logic puzzles and more in a relaxed and companionable setting, this group is for you.

Bowen Treatments to Help Eliminate Muscle and Joint Pain
with Dr Cathy Sevcik, ND

Are you suffering from pain and stiffness in your joints and muscles? Bowen is a hands-on bodywork therapy that is gentle, safe, and enjoyable to receive. The patient lays on a treatment table (or sits if needed) while the practitioner activates sequential locations on the body. These activations allow the nervous system to re-balance heal the body. and This therapy is good for virtually every type of pain including arthritis and injuries and virtually every joint. Please come early for your first appointment to complete some paperwork.

Computer Programs

Barclay Manor has five computer stations, complimentary wireless internet, and a printer that members are invited to come and use. We offer a variety of classes, seminars and tutoring for beginner and advanced learners alike. These include:

Computer Class for Beginners

Our beginners’ level class takes you through all the important basics with patient and clear instruction in a small group setting. Topics covered include:
-computer parts & terminology
-keyboard & mouse skills
-navigating programs
-understanding the desktop & windows
-browsing the internet
Students are welcome to bring their own laptop (no Macs, please) or to use our computers.

Intermediate Computer Class

If you are an intermediate computer user and want to take your knowledge to the next level, this is the class for you. It is based on a combination of lessons and student questions.

Computer Coach Appointments

Free, one-on-one 60 minute appointments with a tutor to ask specific questions or learn a certain skill.

Computer Seminars

Offered once a month, these small group seminars focus on a more advanced skill or program such as Twitter, Email: Beyond the Basics, and Skype.

Computer Drop-in with Tutor

This is drop-in time for members who wish to use a computers to check their email, play games or explore the internet. There is a tutor present if you have any questions as you go along.

Mondays 11am to 1pm

Tuesdays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thursdays 1 to 4 p.m.

Free, Drop-in.

We also offer Computer Drop-in times when you can drop in to use our computers, wireless internet and printer. Times vary month to month so please check our newsletter to make sure you drop by when the room is free.

Enjoy a new or favourite restaurant with the company of other WESN members. Each person pays for his or her own meal but the company and good conversation are free! Check the newsletter for dates and locations and just ask for the WESN table when you arrive.

Energize Your Life

Back by popular demand, this 6-week course offered in partnership by WESN & YMCA Connections is designed to decrease stress, depression, anxiety and re-balance your life. It is facilitated by family practitioner Dr. Divi and is holistic, working with the mind, body and spirit. You learn very specific tasks designed to teach you to re-balance these three areas of your life. Energize Your Life helps you find new ways of alleviating stress, one of the core contributors to ill-health. This is an ESL-friendly course for everyone, whether you have lived in Canada all your life or are a new immigrant! You can find out more about Dr. Divi at http://drdivi.com/speaking-engagements/. English as a Second Language Class

If you would like to learn English, learn it with us! We create a friendly learning environment to help you improve your English. The class level is between beginner level I.

ESL is returing Oct. 10th and will run until December

This new group for non-beginner and intermediate speakers is a friendly and informal chance to brush up on your French conversation and vocabulary alongside other non-native speakers. Learning a language is one of the best things you can do to keep your brain healthy, so why not pick up your school or travel French again?!

Happy Hookers Crafters

Formed in 2004, the Happy Hookers are a craft group that gathers every Friday to share craft projects and socialize. This group sells their crafts at WESN events and community craft sales in order to raise money for WESN programs at Barclay Manor. In 2011, the Happy Hookers raised over $4,000!

Their generosity does not end with Barclay Manor; the Happy Hookers have also donated crafted goods to local seniors’ homes, shelters, and to the Sunrise Rotary Club’s African projects.

Their wares are on sale from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. every Tuesday at Barclay Manor.

If you would like to get involved with this dynamic group drop in to the Happy Hookers session any Friday between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Barclay Manor.

Do you like to sing? Come join other members that love to sing as well in the Barclay Manor Piano Room.

Knitting & Crochet Class

Instructor Kuzi has perfected the art of knitting and crocheting, and will happily lead you through the creation of a beautiful sweater, scarf, or pattern. In this class, you will learn the different styles of knitting, the difference between a single crochet, double crochet, or chain and get hands-on instruction. Kuzi will bring samples to the first class to demonstrate the different styles of knitting and crocheting. Bring an existing project you are trying to finish or come with an open mind! Participants must bring their own materials- if you’re not sure what you need, come to the first class and Kuzi will let you know.

Men’s Breakfast Club

Every Third Wednesday of the month at 9 a.m., the men of WESN get together to have a great breakfast at Hamburger Mary’s Diner. You pay your own bill, but you shoot the breeze for free! Remember that sensational ad about seniors you see pasted on the city buses: “Lonely seniors die sooner.”  That’s the best reason to join us! No reservation needed. Just pop in, eat and shoot the breeze! First timers, WESN pays for your breakfast!

Spanish Conversation

TED Talks

TED made headlines when they moved their conference to Vancouver and now we’re bringing them to Barclay Manor! TED’s mission statement explains what’s got everyone so excited: “We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we’re building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.” Together we’ll watch one or two 5-20 minute TED Talk videos and then share a lively discussion bringing our own ideas, experiences and curiosity into it. Examples of popular TED Talks include: Ron Finley: A guerilla gardener in South Central LA; Lee Cronin: Print your own medicine; Brené Brown: The power of vulnerability; Jane Fonda: Life’s Third Act; and Sue Austin: Deep sea diving…in a wheelchair. Join us for fascinating conversations on cutting-edge ideas!
